PlayTable - Puzzle

I’m so excited to share this with everyone. While looking around online, I came across something that I found to be too amazing not to share. I found something called PlayTable.PlayTable

PlayTable is a new system for hosting board games, that keeps all the interaction of a board game, without the hassle of set-up, or even having to read the rules. It’s the world’s first Board Game Console.

PlayTable Console

Currently, the PlayTable is a week away from being released to the public for sale (I will update this as soon as it comes out) and so I can’t say that I’ve tried it for myself, but from what their website states, it sure seems pretty darn amazing (and I’m one that doesn’t like to recommend things until I’ve tried them, so this makes it all the more impressive). So I’m going to give you the full on facts about this new and exciting device as far as they have been released so far.

Features:

The PlayTable comes with a variety of features that are meant to get rid of all the things you don’t like about board games while keeping all the ones that you do.

Real World Interaction

The PlayTable’s most prominent feature is that the dPlayTable - Pokerigital screen interacts with physical dice and game pieces so that you don’t lose that feeling of actually doing things as you play the games instead of just pushing a button. One of the neat things that this includes is the ability to connect your phone or tablet via Bluetooth and use your device as your card hand. For example, in games like poker, your private hand is hidden on your personal device and to play a card you just swipe it onto the PlayTable.

Store All Your Board Games Digitally

One of the more convenient features of the PlayTable is the ability to store all your favorite board games digitally. With the PlayTable, you no longer have to take up all your storage space with box after box, just the occasional set of pieces that you like to use for the different games that you own.

PlayTable is even going to set up an “app store” so to speak, where you can buy new games from. This way you can buy a new game and not have to wait for it to come in the mail. Also, it is going to give you recommendations on new games for you to try based on what games you already enjoy playing.

These games will probably range anywhere from $20 to $30 depending on what the manufacturers are willing to set their prices at.

Interactive TutorialsPlayTable - Tutorials

Each game that this company (also called PlayTable) is planning on releasing will come with an interactive tutorial explaining how to play the game. So with something like that, you won’t ever have to read the rule book to understand how to play or set it up.

Bring Any Toy to Life

PlayTable - BattlegroundPlayTable has done something pretty amazing with this device, they have programmed it to be able to recognize all Amiibo, Skylanders, and Disney Infinity toys, and they even built in an arena where you can battle these toys against each other. For example, you could have Elsa and Darth Vader battle against Bowser and Mr. Incredible. Then, what’s more, is that they have made it possible to bring your own toys to life, even toys you made yourself, by placing special NFC stickers on their bottoms.

One thing this also allows for is the ability to use the PlayTable as a D&D battle map and even set up your abilities to have different visual effects. It even looks like they are setting up the ability to activate your different abilities with cards that you place on the screen.

Can Extend Your Game Worldwide

This is one of the biggest selling points for me because I havePlayTable - Remote Play family in a different sate that I would love to be able to play board games with on a regular basis. With the PlayTable you will be able to play board games with anyone around the world, and they’ve set this up so you can do it two different ways.

The first way is that your PlayTable and your friend’s PlayTable will connect and show the same screen for all of you to play on. Then all you need is a device with video chat, and it’s as if they are right there with you playing the game. The other way is what really sold me. You can connect your PlayTable to the Internet and as long as the friend has a computer they will be able to use that in order to play with you. They are not required to buy their own PlayTable, and you can still play with them.

Create Your Own Games

Sometimes one of the most fun things you can do is to use your imagination. PlayTable is not something that tries to suppress that but is something that has been designed to encourage that. The creators have announced that they are programming in a platform that will allow anybody to create their own stories, or even games, with no programming knowledge.

PlayTable - CreateThis will let you design the background as easily as dragging your finger across the screen, and you can even upload your own custom images. They wanted to do this not only because they can only design games so quickly, but because they know that part of the allure of board and card games is in the imagination and creativity that they foster.

Another exciting thing that they have announced is that they will be including a way to upload and access your favorite home-brew rules for all the games that you own. This way you can mix things up and make a game new and exciting again.

Durable (And I REALLY Mean Durable)

When the creators were first making the PlayTable, they said that they were treating it with the utmost care because it way their baby. But then they realized that this wasn’t how kids (or even college students) would be treating it and so they stopped that and focused on durability. To test it, they let three nine-year-old girls have at it and the first few prototypes did not hold very well. So after much hard work, they let these three girls have at it again (with a foam hammer to boot) and it finally survived with no breakage whatsoever.PlayTable - Durable

The PlayTable has been made to not only be bang-proof but has been made to be completely spill-proof. Throughout testing, they have spilled almost anything that might happen to spill during one of your game nights. This includes pizza, beer, water, wine, and even soda. This a great reassurance considering what you invested in on this console.

What is Expected to Be Included

As of now, they have not yet released exactly what comes with the PlayTable, but they have hinted that it may come with 10 preinstalled games and quite possibly even a few SmartPeices. None of that has been confirmed yet, I’ve only been able to put that together from the regular emails they’ve sent out to interested supporters.

So now it finally comes down to how much is this amazing console going to cost. Right now they have announced the public launch price of the PlayTable console at $599, but if you’re willing to reserve it now they have limited edition consoles (they only made 500 of them) set to be sold for $448 in total with $99 of that paid as a reservation fee. These consoles will be made from custom materials including Ash Wood, Cherry Wood, and Brushed Aluminum.

I don’t know how long these limited edition ones are going to be up for sale, but I suspect that they won’t be available once they are out for public sale. So if you’re already sold, I would suggest reserving yours as soon as possible. But if you just want to keep in touch with PalyTable and see what they’re doing, feel free to sign up for their email list using any of the links I’ve provided within this page.

I know that some people are totally against the idea of having a board game be replaced with yet another computer screen, but that’s not the idea behind PlayTable. PlayTable is a system that allows for easier access for friends and families to play together without having to take the time to set them up. And still, they aim to take none of the important elements out of the board games.

Elements like puzzle solving, working together, competing, and engaging in a high-quality social interaction. PlayTable isn’t about another screen; at its core, PlayTable is just trying to help bring the world of board games to life.

  1. Ethan, this is awesome! We love playing board games as a family and hate the hassle with the board and pieces and all the storage needed. This would solve all of that and I love the ability to link with other family and friends over the internet to play along. This is a genius idea! Do you know if it will be compatible with classic board games from companies like Mattel and Hasbro? Most of the board games we play are classic ones that have been around for many years. Thanks for sharing this information!

    • Thanks, Erik. They have not yet released the titles of games that will be available, but I do know that they will have an editor installed so that you can “build” your favorite game into it’s not released yet. Or if you don’t have the time, I’m sure they would love to hear the request and they’ll try to get to some of the more popular ones as soon as they can. I also wouldn’t be surprised to find that you will be able to access other people’s custom games as well, but I don’t know for sure on that just yet.

  2. That has got to be one of the coolest things I’ve seen. Wow! That looks like a ton of fun! Has this been around for awhile or have I just been under a rock all this time? lol

  3. Sounds amazing Ethan, I’m not a gamer but I have granddaughters who would absolutely love it. I look forward to your updates after the launch. Keep up the good work!

  4. That’s nice. Does it need internet connection while playing? It seems like that I would be seeing a lot of this now more than the tablets.

    • I haven’t seen just yet whether or not it will require the Internet to play, but I know that it will have an internet connection where you can play with others and download games from. If I were to guess, I would say that it will probably have an offline mode for playing a game you already have. I’ll update everyone with that information when that is confirmed.

Wow, What a cool neat tech device. I’m not too tech-savvy, but I think this is a great idea. It would be cool to play cards with my brother in Florida.

  6. This is a really cool device. For me one of the issues with board games is the need to find space to store them and there are so many little pieces that can easily go missing. I have been wanting to have something digital, which may take some getting used to but I think will be a lot more convenient! The typical tablets don’t really help in that sense so I will be looking forward to PlayTable with great interest!

  7. this is awesome something that i though would be gone in few years, but here we are technology did it again, do you think is gonna be available in Europe as well?

    • So I just got an email back from PlayTable about their availability in Europe. They said:

“While we’re just targeting US customers right now, we intend to ship internationally.
This is one of the reasons why we decided to the reservation as a fully-refundable one – because we’re still early and things may change over time.”

He also said that if you have any more questions on the process or if you have any issues with logistics you can email him directly at jimmy@playtable.com.
      Hope that helps Luca.
